Ok, I know I’m going to sound a bit like an advertiser for this movie, but really I’m just someone who thinks that it is a great film, and one that people should really watch.

If you’ve never heard of it, I’m guessing you want to know: What is The Secret? Well, it’s a film, with commentary from several experts, from Feng Shui artist, to Psychologists, Spiritual Healers, to Quantum Physicists and Authors. They’re all talking about the Law of Attraction, and the power of the human mind to create our own reality. Now, this is not some crazy new-age gobeldygook, it’s actually very reasonable. Basically, what you think about alters your personal reality. If you think only of negative things, your reality becomes one of negative experience. If you think of positive things, your reality becomes one of positive experience.

Anyway, for those who have seen it, and are having trouble making it work, I wanted to share something that has occurred to me. They make mention of imagining life as if you already have the things (health, wealth, relationship) that you want. To many people, this can feel like lying to yourself. As an example, I’m poor. Telling myself that I already have the money I want is a lie. Telling myself that people are kind and good to me when they really treat me like crap is a lie. While some people can train their minds this way, some can’t. So I’ve taken a different approach. Rather than trying to convince myself that things are other than they are, I focus on things that I like. Ok, I know that doesn’t make sense, so let me give you some examples.

I have very little money in the bank. I can’t convince myself that I have plenty of money. So instead of focusing on the lack of money, I say “I like it when there is plenty of money in my bank account.” or “I like it when I get checks in the mail.”
When people treat me badly, I don’t try to tell myself that they’re not doing it. Instead of focusing on how bad they treat me I think: “I like it when people are good to me.” or “I like it when people in bad moods stay away from me.”

The “I like” method, really works for me. Whenever I catch myself thinking about something negative, I turn it around in my head, and try to think of what I would like better. I also make sure I say things that are true. I’ve never thought “I like being rich.”, because I’ve never been rich. I can, however say “I like having enough money to keep my bills paid on time.”

So you see what I’m talking about? I figured I’d share this, because there may be people who see The Secret, and think they have to take the words literally. Really, what the film is trying to teach you, and if you listen carefully, you catch it, is that you need to find ways to alter your thinking to your own best benefit. The quantum physicist says something to the effect of “It’s not about positive thinking, it’s not about crazy notions…” And that’s true. You need to find a way to take the teachings of the film and apply it to your own life. If telling yourself you already have the car of your dreams and a million dollar a year lifestyle works for you, then go with it. If just reminding yourself of what you like works, do that. Apply the lessons in such a way that they will have an effect on you.

Also, I recommend starting small. You can aim for a million dollars a year right off the bat, but it’s probably not going to work the way you want. (It might, but it’s a rough way to start out.) I’d suggest working on things like sleeping better, attracting opportunity, having good things happen, etc. I was trying to think moneymoneymoney, because that’s my biggest problem area. It wasn’t working. So I shifted to other thoughts and goals, and it has been working. I’m sleeping better, my once annoying housemates have been nicer to me, and are now moving out, I got a free MP3 player, I am building a new Zazzle store online with relative ease… Things that I have been wanting are coming to me.

Try applying The Secret in different ways. I’m sure you’ll find one that will work for you, and I wish you all the abundance and happiness in the world once you find it.
