There are so many “gurus” out there saying that they’re trying to make the world a better place, but are they really? Are you checking into the people whose information you follow before you become a follower and supporter? If not, you should be.

Did you know that James Arthur Ray is in prison for several deaths? Did you know that despite his humble beginnings as a homeless person, Joe Vitale is a self-serving, materialistic [taking a deep breath so I don’t use any foul language here]? Did you know that most psychics are unwilling to prove their “talents” are real because they know they aren’t? Have you ever really paid attention to who these people are behind the scenes? You should.

Much like idolizing a celebrity, if you intend to mold yourself after someone, you really need to know who that someone is, not just who they say they are. You need to know if you’re following the messages of a hypocrite or liar. You should educate yourself about the person as well as their teachings.

Honestly though, you’re better off not modeling yourself after anyone. Be the best *you* that you can be. Do what you know in your soul is right. If you want or need guidance, make sure you know who it is that you’re getting it from. Often, you don’t need a famous guru or teacher. You can find plenty of extraordinary people all around you. You can learn from every person you meet if you want to. You might learn who and what not to be, but you can always learn something.

If you want to be a better person, take it as seriously as you would any other education. Would you try to get a degree from a college that has no accreditation and despite it’s lovely facade is actually a front for a drug ring? Of course not. You’d make sure they had all their ducks in a row before paying them and tagging their name onto a part of your life. Self-help and spiritual teachers are no different.
