Once again I’m using people who annoy me as fuel for writing. There’s nothing quite like turning my frustration into something that does good for the world and makes me money at the same time.

There are a couple of people in a group I belong to that are total conversation hijackers. A post starts off about one subject or one person, and they come in and have to somehow make it about them. One just tends to derail topics entirely with their pushy, bossy attitude. One likes to take the focus off whoever was talking and put it on themselves. Another one likes to make it all about how they know SO much, as if they’re superior to everyone else.

People like that are bothersome to everyone around them. It can get quite annoying when someone is always diverting attention or pushing the conversation off track. No matter how they do it, it usually boils down to one of two reasons. 1) They’re insecure and want all eyes on them so they feel important. 2) They’re insecure and they want to make others feel inferior so they can feel superior. Oh wait, that’s just one reason, isn’t it? Hmm…

A person who is secure and respectful doesn’t need to take over a conversation, whether online or in person. They don’t need extra attention or to make anyone else feel bad. They can engage in conversations while keeping things on point and with focus on the right person or people. It’s people who are insecure that feel the need to be overly defensive, draw attention to themselves or insult other people without cause.

Are you a conversation hijacker? Really think and be honest about it. You don’t have to admit it publicly, but you should think about it. If you are one, now is a great time to start working on being more respectful of others and more secure with yourself.
