I’m Happier Without the FaceBook Addiction

A while back I mentioned that I was going to be cutting back on my FaceBook use. Well, it’s been a bit over a month, and I think I made a very good decision.

What really made me think about it was yesterday. I decided to go over and disconnect from some people so that maybe someday I could have a news feed that was manageable and interesting. It took no time at all for me to become annoyed with FaceBook’s lack of cooperation and user-friendliness. I gave up on trying to disconnect from people.

So I decided to go over to one of my lists and read posts from people I know. I sifted through 56 pointless images and memes, a few cute memes, 12 music videos, 5 game notifications, about a dozen status messages that apparently only made sense if you were in the poster’s head, and a few pictures from a friend’s party. Overall, nothing that really made it worth looking over nearly 100 posts.

And of course when I went to the regular feed I was greeted with a combination of memes, images I didn’t care about and negativity from the news. Yay. I closed the browser tab and went off to another site. FaceBook has very little to offer me, and the few minutes I spent there were more frustrating and annoying than they were worth.

Part of the problem with FaceBook is of course, that it’s FaceBook, and is not user friendly and doesn’t cater to a person’s actual needs. The rest of the fault lies in the fact that people post what they do. Junk and negativity more than anything. That or they’re pitching something they’re trying to sell. It’s hard to find the gems that are funny, touching or educational.

So, I’m back to only going over there when I get a private message. I do sort of miss Bitstrips, but I can probably live without them. I have for a month so far. FaceBook just doesn’t add happiness to my life, so I’m better off without it. It certainly does leave me with a lot more time in the day to do things that I actually enjoy. [smiles]
