Today’s society has a way of making people feel pretty bad about themselves. We’re taught to compare ourselves to others and only see what we lack rather than what we have. In order to be healthy, happy people, we need to stop measuring ourselves against someone else’s standards, and see how amazing we are in our own right. We have to be grateful for who we are and what we have, and in that we become better to those around us.

Some think that looking for the good in yourself, using words like “awesome”, “amazing” or “wonderful” about yourself is conceited, but it doesn’t have to be. Low self-esteem is at an all-time high in the world, and remembering what makes you great can be incredibly beneficial. After all, if you don’t love and respect yourself, how can anyone else? We have to feel good about ourselves or we’re no good to anyone. There’s a big difference between loving yourself and being confident, and being conceited or narcissistic.

When I offer help to people having a rough time in their lives, one of the first things I do if I sense any self-esteem issues is ask them to list off things that they like about themselves. Not physical attributes, because society is already too focused on that, but internal attributes. What are your talents, skills, what parts of your personality do you like or take the most pride in? Looking for these things can make you feel so much better about yourself. No matter who you are, no matter what society and other people have told you, every last one of you out there has good qualities that you could focus on.

When we think about what’s positive within us, we tend to start looking for more of it. We want to feel good, and it doesn’t take long to realize that finding all the things within yourself that make you special and valuable feels good. As you grab onto those positive traits, you’ll find more, and you’ll want to develop more. As you become more confident and learn to love yourself more, you bring that light and energy into everything you do, and it makes the world just a little bit better.

So today I want you to share with me at least one thing that makes you amazing or that you love about yourself. Are you really honest, and in a caring way? Are you great at making kids smile? Are you a fantastic pet parent? Do you love donating your time to charity? Do you have some skill or talent that you feel really good about? Maybe you’re a good writer, a talented painter, or you’re really good at roller skating backwards while blowing bubbles. Whatever it is, share at least one thing that makes you feel good about yourself that doesn’t have anything to do with looks or money.
