Take a look around, ad you’ll quickly see that there’s a lot of hate and fighting in the world. There’s a war on drugs, gangs, terrorism, and women. There’s hate and fighting between races, religions, genders and people in general. We’re tearing each other and our society apart. We need to change the way we think and the way we act if we ever hope to have a stable and thriving society.

It sounds hokey to say that love is what we need, but it really is. Love for our fellow human, compassion, and understanding are far stronger than hate, fear and violence. The latter may get more air time on the news, but that doesn’t mean they’re right. Unity and kindness make a stronger foundation than anything else.

Every day, each of us has the choice to fight or love. You see something online that you don’t like. You can post hateful comments and start a fight if you want. Or, you could choose to respect that person’s right to do what makes them happy. You could love their individuality. You could say nothing, or say something positive or useful. You always have a choice.

Maybe someone cuts you off in traffic. You could rage and swear, maybe even taking some action against them. Or, you could have some compassion. Maybe they’re late for work and will get fired if they don’t get there in time. Maybe the driver’s wife is laying on the back seat in labor. You don’t know. You can choose to have a negative response, or choose to be loving and let it go.

People are constantly fighting in this war on drugs. We put all that energy into trying to get drugs off the streets. What if instead, we focused on loving each other, and loving those who have drug problems? If they had love and understanding and support, they wouldn’t need drugs. The problem isn’t the drugs, it’s the people who are hurting or troubled and use the drugs to escape. If they didn’t have drugs, they’d turn to something else. If we heal the people through love and kindness, they wouldn’t need the drugs or alcohol in the first place.

We see violence in the news every day, and it’s because we’re fighting with each other over who’s better and who’s right. We could choose instead to accept and love one another, and allow people to live whatever life they choose, so long as it is not directly harming someone else. We could look beyond the petty, surface issues of race, religion and orientation and see each other for the beautiful humans we are. Under it all, we’re all the same, and there’s no reason to fight over that.

Every day, each and every one of us has the ability to choose love or hate, kindness or violence. We can choose to be better people. We need to start making that choice. The media tries very hard to fill our minds with hate, fear and division, but we can fight, one person at a time, one action at a time. We can build a better society by simply choosing love over hate, compassion over anger. Which choice are you making?
