A lot of people have been feeling the weight of the news that Donald Trump is our new president. The fact that nearly half of our country voted for him is astounding and almost unfathomable to the other half. Social networks are filled with disbelief, worry, fear and distress over this outcome. I myself am having serious trouble understanding how this could happen, and it hit everyone in my home rather hard. We prayed that it wasn’t true, but unfortunately, it is.

I could easily do what many others have done and fly off into a panicked, hate-filled rage about this situation. It’s so insane, so unbelievable, I can’t say that I really blame the people who are treating this news as if it’s the end of the world. For all we know, it could be almost that bad. This man is horrid in ways that words can’t describe, and it’s unbelievable that so many thought he was a good choice to run our country. (For the record, we aren’t Hillary Clinton supporters, she would only have been the lesser of two evils.) However, rather than scream, rage and go headlong into prepper mode, I think it’s better to take a step back and look at things a bit differently.

I think now, more than ever, we all need to come together. We need to love and support one another as a global community. Of course, unity has always been something we should strive for, but with current affairs in the US and across the world, I think this is absolutely a crucial time for us to set aside our differences and be as good to one another as we can be.

I have seen society as a whole falling further and further over the last decade, and it needs to stop. We need to let go of the hate and fear and become a united front. In the last handful of years I have seen new terms arise, new movements be born, and so much of it is focused on hate and shining a light on how someone isn’t like someone else. We are breaking into smaller and smaller groups, becoming more shallow, more selfish and more hateful. Instead of looking out for just ourselves or our little special interest groups, we need to be looking out for humanity as a whole, and looking for the threads that bind us as one global community. We have so much in common if you only look.

Right now, we need to love each other. We need to take care of one another. There is a darkness, a gloom, that has been settling over the world, growing thicker by the day. We can lift it, but it’s going to take work. It’s up to each and every one of us to be the best person that we can be, to ourselves and to everyone we come in contact with, both in the real world and the virtual one. Each of us has to do whatever we can to spread peace, love, understanding and unity.

When each of us does what we can to be better, to be kinder and more understanding, we make ripples in this great pond of humanity. Good spreads just as easily as bad does. By being our best selves, we create an example for others. Smile at someone. Say thank you. Hold the door for a stranger. Compliment someone you don’t know. Stand up for someone who’s being bullied. Speak up against bigotry. Give to someone in need. Post positive news instead of negative. Let someone with fewer items go ahead of you in the checkout lane. Comment from a place of kindness rather than from anger. Make someone laugh. Do little things. Do big things. Do something to make the world a better place every day. Love, laugh, share, learn, grow and be amazing to yourself and others.

Every good act, every good feeling, spills out into the world and affects others. No matter what’s going on in politics or whatever it is that’s going wrong, these little bits can create change. As more of us are kind and loving and united, we become more powerful. We can handle what life throws at us, and even change it for the better. It may be easy to rant and cry and be fearful and hateful, but that will never make anything better. We have to make every little positive change that we can, and together, we can make the world a better place.
